Vaterländische Front (VF) · 1933–1938

Fatherland Front (Austria)

조국전선 (오스트리아)

The sole legal political organisation of the Federal State of Austria, founded on 20 May 1933 by the Christian Social chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss. A right-wing authoritarian and corporatist body tied to the Catholic Church, it opposed both Nazism and Marxism and stood for Austria’s independence from Germany.

In depth

After suspending parliament in March 1933, Dollfuss brought the Christian Social Party, the Landbund and the Heimwehr together in the Fatherland Front. In February 1934 he crushed the rising of the Social Democrats and workers with the army and the Heimwehr, and in May proclaimed a corporatist constitution, establishing the regime often called Austrofascism. After Dollfuss was killed in the Nazi putsch of July 1934, Kurt Schuschnigg succeeded him. The Front was dissolved with the German annexation of March 1938.
