Feuillants

Group of constitutional-monarchist deputies who broke with the Jacobin Club on 16 July 1791, after the flight to Varennes, in protest at planned demonstrations against Louis XVI, and met in the former Feuillant monastery on the rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. It dispersed after the fall of the monarchy on 10 August 1792.

It was led by Antoine Barnave, Alexandre de Lameth and Adrien Duport and called itself the Society of the Friends of the Constitution. In his speech of 15 July 1791 Barnave argued for the king's personal inviolability, with responsibility borne by the officials who actually administered, and warned that one step further toward liberty would abolish the monarchy and one step further toward equality would attack property. The Champ de Mars massacre followed on 17 July, the day after the split, and on 30 September a law restricting the political action of popular societies was passed with Feuillant support. In the Legislative Assembly they formed the right, initially with 264 former Jacobin deputies.
