Gustav Line
구스타프선
The Gustav Line was a German defensive system built across Italy in late 1943 during the Second World War. Running from the Garigliano estuary through Cassino and the Apennines to the Adriatic coast, it delayed the Allied advance toward Rome and was breached during Operation Diadem in May 1944.
In depth
The Gustav Line was a defense in depth that used Italy's mountains and rivers, linking the Cassino sector in the west with the Sangro area on the Adriatic side. The Allies attacked around Cassino repeatedly from January 1944, while the 22 January landing at Anzio was intended to outflank the line and threaten the German rear. The beachhead nevertheless became fixed, turning the Cassino and Anzio operations into interconnected attritional battles. Operation Diadem, begun on 11 May, attacked at multiple points; German forces withdrew, and the fall of Cassino on 18 May opened the route toward Rome.
