Indulgents

관용파

Current within the Montagnards of the French Revolution, centred on Georges Danton and Camille Desmoulins, that from late 1793 called for relaxing the Terror; also called the Dantonists. It ended with the execution of its leaders on 5 April 1794.

In depth

They sought to slow the Revolution's violence after the fall of the Girondins. Desmoulins challenged the Terror in his newspaper Le Vieux Cordelier. Danton himself belonged to the Mountain and had played an important part in the fall of the king, and the Indulgents had also helped build the revolutionary government. Arrested on the night of 30–31 March 1794, they were tried on 2–4 April, condemned by the Revolutionary Tribunal on 5 April and guillotined. Following the Hébertists' execution in March, this purge let the revolutionary government remove in turn its rivals in the popular movement and the calls for moderation inside the assembly. Reading the conflict as a split within one revolutionary camp over the duration and intensity of emergency rule, rather than a clash of fixed moderates and radicals, is an interpretation.
