Nasjonal Samling
국민연합 (노르웨이)
A Norwegian far-right party active from 1933 to 1945, founded by the former defence minister Vidkun Quisling. It was the only legal party in Norway from 1942 to 1945 under the German occupation.
In depth
Founded on 13 May 1933, it had a paramilitary wing, the Hird. Before the war it never won more than 2.5 per cent of the vote or a single seat. When Germany invaded on 9 April 1940, Quisling proclaimed himself prime minister on the radio but, lacking German backing, stood down within days. Under the German Reichskommissar Josef Terboven the party took part in the occupation administration, and in February 1942 Quisling became minister-president of a “national government”. It helped deport Norway’s Jews, was dissolved in May 1945, and Quisling was executed for treason.
