Azərbaycan Milli İstiqlal Partiyası · 1992–present

National Independence Party of Azerbaijan

아제르바이잔 민족독립당

A centre-right party in Azerbaijan led by Etibar Mammadov, founded and registered in July 1992. It is credited with re-establishing the multi-party system in Azerbaijan after Soviet rule, and Mammadov came second in the 1998 presidential election.

In depth

The party was founded on 3–4 July 1992 and registered with the Justice Ministry on 17 July. Its leader Mammadov was one of the leading figures of the Azerbaijani national freedom movement; on 26 January 1990 he was arrested in Moscow while holding a press conference on the Baku massacre of 20 January and held in Lefortovo prison.

The party has taken part in every election since independence. Mammadov withdrew his candidacy in the 1992 presidential election, but the party cleared the 8% threshold in the 1995 parliamentary election and entered parliament, and Mammadov came second in the 1998 presidential election. In the 2004 municipal elections it won the second-largest number of municipal seats after the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.

Its stated aim is to combine Azerbaijanism and modernisation, conservatism in tradition and morality, economic liberty and social justice. It became an associate member of the International Democracy Union, an association of centre-right parties, in 1996 and a full member in May 1999.
