Organisation Consul

콘술 기관

A German ultranationalist and antisemitic militant organisation active in the Weimar Republic from 1920 to 1922. Formed by members of the disbanded Freikorps Marine Brigade Ehrhardt, it carried out political assassinations, including those of Matthias Erzberger and Walther Rathenau, aiming to destroy the Republic and set up a right-wing dictatorship.

In depth

When the Marine Brigade Ehrhardt, which had taken part in the Kapp Putsch, was disbanded in 1920, Hermann Ehrhardt organised its remaining men into a secret organisation, named after his alias “Consul Eichmann”. It murdered the former finance minister Erzberger, who had signed the armistice, in August 1921 and the Jewish foreign minister Rathenau in June 1922, and attacked the Social Democrat Philipp Scheidemann with prussic acid. The young Ernst von Salomon took part in the Rathenau plot. After the government banned the organisation in 1922, Ehrhardt founded the Viking League as its successor in 1923.
