Raid on the Sublime Porte (1913)

바브알리 습격 (1913)

The coup of 23 January 1913 in which members of the Committee of Union and Progress led by Enver and Talât raided the Sublime Porte and overthrew Kâmil Pasha's cabinet. It withdrew the Ottomans from the London peace talks, renewed the First Balkan War and opened the way to CUP dictatorship.

In depth

In 1912 the Committee of Union and Progress won a fraudulent general election in April, lost power to a military coup in July, and in October Kâmil Pasha formed a cabinet with Sultan Mehmed V's permission. Defeated in the First Balkan War, Kâmil's government negotiated with Bulgaria, and the looming demand for the cession of the old capital, Edirne, outraged the CUP leadership and the Turkish public. Enver, back from Libya and made chief of staff of the Tenth Corps, tried to force Kâmil out but could not persuade the sultan to dismiss him.

On 23 January Enver and Talât stormed into the Sublime Porte with some fifty Unionists and made Kâmil Pasha resign at gunpoint; War Minister Nazım Pasha was killed in the raid. The new government under Mahmud Şevket Pasha withdrew from the London peace conference and resumed the war on 3 February, but could not save Edirne. After Şevket Pasha's assassination in June the CUP arrested or exiled opposition leaders and took full control of the empire under the triumvirate of the "Three Pashas", Enver, Talât and Cemal. The recovery of Edirne in the Second Balkan War moved the CUP closer to Germany.
