Special Tribunal for the Defence of the State
국가 방위 특별 재판소
A special court of Fascist Italy used to try crimes against the regime, created on 25 November 1926 as one of the leggi fascistissime that consolidated the totalitarian regime.
In depth
Its judges were drawn from officers of the Fascist militia and the armed forces rather than the ordinary courts, and it could impose the death penalty. Antonio Gramsci was sentenced by it to twenty years in 1928, the prosecutor reportedly declaring that his brain must be stopped from working for twenty years. Until Mussolini’s fall in 1943 it tried thousands of anti-fascists, communists, anarchists and socialists among them.
