Zakłady Metalowe im. Józefa Stalina w Poznaniu (ZISPO) · 1953–1956

ZISPO (Joseph Stalin Metal Works)

ZISPO (스탈린 금속공업 공장)

ZISPO was the state-owned metalworks in Poznań created when the H. Cegielski works were renamed in 1953. The workers’ strike that began there on 28 June 1956 expanded into the Poznań uprising.

In depth

ZISPO reflects both the nationalisation of industry in the Polish People’s Republic and the Stalinist practice of attaching leaders’ names to institutions. The works became the starting point of the 1956 explosion of discontent over wages and working conditions, and later regained the H. Cegielski name.

The original Polish name is Zakłady Metalowe im. Józefa Stalina w Poznaniu; ZISPO is its abbreviation.
