Party chief who led the Gorky region for 14 years and the last Soviet overseer of religious affairs
In June 1990, Khristoradnov took the podium at the Russian Orthodox Church's Local Council to deliver the Soviet government's greeting — the same council that would elect Alexy II as Patriarch.
Yuri Khristoradnov was a regional party boss of the Brezhnev era who served 14 years as First Secretary of the Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod) Regional Party Committee, overseeing large-scale housing construction and the launch of the city's metro. Starting as a foundry worker at the Gorky Automobile Plant, he rose through the party apparatus and sat on the CPSU Central Committee from 1976 to 1990. During perestroika he became Chairman of the Soviet of the Union (1988–1989) and then the last Chairman of the Council for Religious Affairs (1989–1991), managing state–church relations through Gorbachev's liberalization of religious policy. In 1990 he delivered the Soviet government's greeting to the Russian Orthodox Church Local Council that elected Patriarch Alexy II.
