Cvetković–Maček Agreement
크베트코비치-마체크 협정
A political compromise concluded in August 1939 by Dragiša Cvetković and Vladko Maček in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. It established the autonomous Banovina of Croatia with broad internal powers, but did not comprehensively resolve the state’s Serb-Croat national conflict.
In depth
The agreement combined the Sava and Littoral Banovinas with adjoining districts to create the Banovina of Croatia. Agriculture, commerce and industry, education, justice, and internal administration were transferred to the banovina, while foreign affairs, the army, and police remained with the central government. Maček became deputy prime minister and Croatian Peasant Party figures entered the coalition government. Opposition from Serb communities and political forces, disputes over the representation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and criticism from the Ustaše and communists continued; the arrangement collapsed after the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia in 1941.
