A tradition that gives priority to individual liberty and demands justification for authority and restrictions on freedom. Its accounts of freedom, the state, markets and property differ internally.

French Revolutionary rights declarations combined liberty, legal equality and property rights. Their exclusions and rules of political participation should not be equated with every later liberal tradition. Liberalism and neoliberalism are also not interchangeable terms.
