Slovak Soviet Republic

슬로바키아 평의회 공화국

A Communist state proclaimed in Prešov on 16 June 1919, during the Hungarian Red Army’s northern campaign, which lasted until 7 July. Headed by the Czech journalist Antonín Janoušek, it depended on the Hungarian Soviet Republic.

In depth

It decreed the socialisation of the means of production and the nationalisation of factories with more than twenty workers, large estates and financial institutions, and set up revolutionary tribunals, a Red Army and a red guard, but whether it was part of Hungary or independent, and where its borders lay, was never settled. The Czech historian Jaroslav Šebek sees it partly as a cover for renewing Hungarian influence in Slovakia.

It disappeared when Hungarian troops withdrew behind the demarcation line from late June under the Clemenceau note, and its territory was incorporated into Czechoslovakia.
