Vernalization (Yarovizatsiya)

An agricultural technique in which winter grain seeds are moistened and chilled before sowing, enabling them to flower and bear grain when planted in spring: named 'yarovizatsiya' by Trofim Lysenko in 1929. In the 1930s it was applied to up to 13% of Soviet grain acreage, but labor intensity and inconsistent results led to its postwar abandonment except for millet and potato. While vernalization had genuine value as a breeding tool (Nikolai Vavilov supported it as such), Lysenko claimed the vernalized state was heritable, using the technique as proof of the inheritance of acquired characteristics and a weapon against Mendelian genetics.
