An economist-politician of restored independence

Albertas Šimėnas was an economist who entered politics through Lithuania’s independence movement and signed the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania on 11 March 1990. He headed the government in January 1991 as Soviet troops surrounded key buildings in Vilnius, then disappeared during the crackdown and was replaced as prime minister after three days. He later worked as economy minister and a member of parliament, contributing to the economic reforms and institutional consolidation of the restored state.
