Peasant-born officer elected commandant of Stavropol on the Volga when the Chapan War rebels took it in 1919
Born into a peasant family at Yagodnoye in Samara province, he rose to lieutenant in the First World War. Back home in 1918 he became a member of the district executive committee and a people's judge. When the Chapan War spread in March 1919, on the 5th he helped bring a punitive detachment at Yagodnoye over to the rebels and then led the village band, and on the 7th he entered Stavropol and was elected commandant of the town at a mass meeting. He proclaimed that the peasants had risen not against Soviet power but against the dictatorship of the communists, yet communists and activists were persecuted under his rule. When the Red Army retook the town on the 13th he broke out, joined the Red Army under another man's name and was amnestied in April 1920. He was arrested in 1930 and died in his home village in 1951.
