Founder of the Polish People's Party and ideologue of the Galician peasant movement

Born into a noble family in Polesia, he studied chemical engineering in St Petersburg and, as a socialist linked to Limanowski's Lud Polski, served three years in prison. Moving to Lwów in 1885, he published Przegląd Społeczny and Przyjaciel Ludu, which became the centre of the peasant movement in the Austrian partition. In 1895 he co-founded the People's Party (from 1903 the Polish People's Party); he split from it in 1912, then belonged to 'Piast' (1914–1923) and 'Wyzwolenie' (1923–1925). He was a senator from 1922 to 1927 and died in Lwów in 1937.
