Born at Saint-Louis in the Haut-Rhin in 1843, the son of an inspector of indirect taxes, he worked as a commercial traveller for tapestry manufacturers. During the siege he was elected a National Guard battalion commander and joined the Republican Central Committee of the Twenty Arrondissements. He signed the Affiche Rouge of 7 January 1871, and on 26 March he was elected to the Commune for the 17th arrondissement, sitting on the general security and external relations commissions. On 1 May he became a member of the first Committee of Public Safety. When his friend Louis Rossel was arrested on the committee's orders, on 10 May he helped him escape and fled with him.
