One of the two directors who made Chapaev as the "Vasilyev brothers"
Born in Vologda, he served in the Red Army in the Civil War. From 1924 he re-edited foreign films, teaming up with his namesake Sergei Vasilyev in the same cutting room. They were not related, but accepted the popular mistake and signed their films as the Vasilyev brothers. Chapaev (1934) drew over 30 million viewers in a year and won a first-class Stalin Prize in 1941. He died of tuberculosis of the larynx at a sanatorium near Ljubljana in 1946.
