Greek prime minister who revised the deficit figures in 2009 and requested the first bailout
Son of Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou and grandson of Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou, he was born in Minnesota in the United States. As leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) he won the October 2009 election and became prime minister on 6 October. His government revised the 2009 budget deficit to 12.7 percent of GDP, and on 23 April 2010, on the island of Kastellorizo, he asked the European Union for support and accepted the first bailout of €110 billion. On 31 October 2011 he announced a referendum on the second bailout, withdrew it under pressure from European leaders, and stepped down in November.
