Agronomist and state-farm director who became USSR Minister of Agriculture in Khrushchev’s last years
Born in January 1917 (December 1916 Old Style) into a peasant family in Karyzh, Kursk Governorate, he graduated from the Voronezh Agricultural Institute in 1942 as an agronomist. In the Great Patriotic War he served as deputy company commander for technical affairs in Guards tank formations, and he joined the party in 1946. As director of the Petrovsky state farm in Lipetsk Oblast in 1951–1963 he was made a Hero of Socialist Labour in 1961. He was USSR Minister of Agriculture in 1963–1965, first deputy minister in 1965–1972 and RSFSR Minister of State Farms in 1972–1975, and in 1977–1983 he was agricultural attaché at the Soviet embassy in East Germany.
