Jura Federation leader expelled with Bakunin at the Hague Congress

Born in London in 1844, he returned to Switzerland with his family in 1848. Teaching French and history at Le Locle, he founded the local section of the International in 1866 and was dismissed from teaching for his politics in 1869. He led the founding of the Jura Federation and edited La Solidarité and the Bulletin de la Fédération jurassienne. Sent to the Hague Congress of 1872 in Bakunin's place, he was expelled together with Bakunin and then took a leading part in founding the Anti-authoritarian International at Saint-Imier. Prosecuted after demonstrations in Bern in 1877, he moved to Paris and edited dictionaries of education; late in life he published Bakunin's works and L'Internationale: documents et souvenirs. He died at Neuchâtel in 1916.
