General of the Algerian conquest, war minister against the June insurgents, arrested in the coup as Louis Napoleon's opponent
Born in Nantes in 1806, he graduated from the École Polytechnique and was commissioned in the engineers. From 1830 he fought in the conquest of Algeria, organised the Zouaves and, under Bugeaud, fought Abd el-Kader, taking part in massacres of civilians. He became a general of division in 1843 and captured Abd el-Kader in 1847. Deputy for the Sarthe from 1846, he was Cavaignac's war minister during the June Days of 1848 and led the repression of the rising. From 1848 to 1851 he was one of the most conspicuous opponents of Louis Napoleon, and he was arrested and exiled after the coup of 2 December. In 1860 he took command of the papal army and was heavily defeated by the Italians at Castelfidardo.
