Designer whose storable-propellant rockets became the backbone of the Strategic Rocket Forces
On 24 October 1960, during the Nedelin catastrophe — when an R-16 exploded on the launch pad and killed 126 people — Yangel stepped away to the smoking room and survived. Later he said simply: 'Fate spared me.'
Born to exiled settlers in Irkutsk, he graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute, designed fighters, then became Chief Designer of OKB-586 (Yuzhnoye) in Dnepropetrovsk in 1954. He pioneered storable hypergolic propellants and fielded the R-12, R-14, R-16, and R-36 ICBMs, the backbone of the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces, as well as the Kosmos and Tsiklon space launchers. He survived the 1960 Nedelin catastrophe by stepping away to the smoking room; in 1971 he died of a heart attack on stage at his own 60th-birthday celebration.

Storable Propellants and Autonomous Guidance: Backbone of the Strategic Rocket Forces
Yangel's most decisive technical choice was high-boiling (storable) propellants with autonomous inertial guidance. While Korolev insisted on cryogenic oxidizers like liquid oxygen, requiring fuel to be loaded just before launch, Yangel adopted toxic but room-temperature-storable propellants: unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) and nitrogen tetroxide. The trade-off accepted handling hazards in exchange for the ability to remain fully fueled in silos for extended periods, delivering genuine nuclear deterrence. Autonomous inertial guidance allowed each missile to fly to its target without ground-based radio stations, ensuring retaliatory capability even if ground infrastructure were destroyed early in a conflict. This line, R-12, R-14, R-16, R-36, became the mainstay of the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces. Military officers summed up the distinction with the aphorism: 'Korolev works for TASS, Chelomei works on crap, Yangel works for us.' The storable-propellant architecture Yangel established was inherited by the R-36M (SS-18 Satan) and the Zenit launcher, remaining the foundation of Soviet and Russian strategic missile forces well beyond the Cold War.
