Никола I
Monarchy and royalism Montenegro Montenegro 1841–1921 → Died in exile

Last monarch of Montenegro, the first to declare war on the Ottomans in 1912, who took Scutari in defiance of the Great Powers

Prince of Montenegro from 1860 and its first and only king from 1910. When the Balkan Wars broke out in 1912 he was the most enthusiastic of the allies, eager to drive the Ottomans out of Europe, and on 8 October Montenegro was the first to declare war. Defying the Concert of Europe, which blockaded the whole Montenegrin coast, he took Scutari after a siege in April 1913, but the Great Powers, set on an independent Albania, made him give it up. Montenegro was overrun by Austria-Hungary in 1916 and he fled to Italy and France; deposed in 1918, he went on claiming the throne until his death at Antibes in 1921.
