Ока Иванович Городовиков

Kalmyk Red cavalry commander who led the 2nd Cavalry Army in Northern Taurida in 1920

Born to a poor Kalmyk family on the Don, he served in Don Cossack regiments of the Imperial army and after the February Revolution formed a Kalmyk Red Guard unit. Captured by Don Cossacks in February 1918 and sentenced to be shot, he escaped that night, and as squadron and brigade commander under Dumenko and Budyonny made his name in the defence of Tsaritsyn. In August 1919 he took over the 4th Cavalry Division, which burst unexpectedly into Rostov, and that year he joined the Bolshevik party. From July 1920 he led the 2nd Cavalry Army against Wrangel in Northern Taurida but was replaced by Mironov on 6 September after heavy losses, and from October commanded the 6th Cavalry Division of the 1st Cavalry Army in the Perekop–Chongar operation. He was inspector of Red Army cavalry in the Second World War and became Hero of the Soviet Union in 1958.
