Paris prefect of police installed by Bonaparte, who ran the gold-ingot lottery

Born at Champigny-sur-Yonne in 1794, he headed the police during the revolutions of 1830 and 1848 and joined the general council of the Yonne in 1848. Siding with Louis Napoleon, he became prefect of police in Paris on 8 November 1849 and in February 1850 had all the trees of liberty planted in 1848 pulled up. The same year he organised the gold-ingot lottery. He joined the coup plotters from August 1851, but was removed in October, his plans judged unsuitable and himself suspected of being too close to the royalists and General Changarnier. After the coup he was government commissioner for the Cher, Allier and Nièvre, and became a councillor of state.
