Bukhara-born novelist who became the last First Secretary of the Union of Soviet Writers

Born in Bukhara in 1939, he graduated from the Bukhara Pedagogical Institute in 1963 and the higher courses for screenwriters and directors in Moscow, and worked as chief editor of the Uzbekfilm studio. He joined the Union of Soviet Writers in 1968 and was elected First Secretary of its Board in 1991. When the union was reorganised in 1992 into the International Community of Writers' Unions of Russia and the CIS, he became First Secretary of its executive committee and chaired it from 1994 to 2000. He is known for the novels The Tarazi Turtle and Floating Eurasia, and was named People's Writer of the Uzbek SSR in 1989.
