Brescian patriot who led the fighting of the Ten Days of Brescia in 1849 and was hanged at Belfiore in 1853

Born in Brescia in 1825, the eldest son of a painter who had served in Napoleon's army, he volunteered in the First Italian War of Independence in 1848, marching with the Lombard Volunteer Corps into Trentino and fighting at Sclemo. After the armistice he returned to Brescia and helped the clandestine committee prepare a rising, and in the Ten Days of Brescia in March 1849 he personally led the insurgents' fighting and commanded the defence of Porta Torrelunga. When the city surrendered on 1 April he fled to Lugano in Swiss Ticino, but returned after an amnesty and spread Mazzinian bulletins and loan bonds. His conspiracy was uncovered at the end of 1851; found guilty of high treason, he was hanged at Belfiore on 3 March 1853, one of the Belfiore martyrs.
