Siberian partisan leader of the Taseyevo Partisan Republic who became People’s Commissar of Agriculture under the NEP
Born in 1889 into a peasant family in Taseyevo, Yeniseysk Governorate, he was orphaned at nine and worked as a farmhand, then fought in the First World War as a non-commissioned officer. He joined the RSDLP(b) in July 1917. In December 1918 he led the Taseyevo uprising and organised partisan warfare against Kolchak’s forces, chairing the military-revolutionary staff of the Taseyevo Partisan Republic and then the army council and staff of the North Kansk partisan front. Appointed RSFSR People’s Commissar of Agriculture in January 1922, he was known as an ardent supporter of the NEP, and in 1923–1926 he was People’s Commissar of Social Security. Arrested in February 1937, he was sentenced to death by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court on 29 July and shot the same day; he was rehabilitated in 1956.
