Kharkov party boss who ran the Central Committee's party organs departments under Khrushchev and helped defeat the 1957 Anti-Party Group
Born in Belgorod in 1904 to a worker's family, he joined the VKP(b) in 1929. After working as a foreman and chief mechanic at the Kharkov machine-tool plant he moved to party work, serving as second secretary of the Kharkov city committee in 1940–1943 and first secretary of the Kharkov regional committee in 1944–1950. He worked in the Central Committee's party organs department from 1952, heading the Department of Party Organs for the RSFSR in 1955–1959 and the Department of Party Organs for the Union Republics in 1959–1961. In June 1957 he helped thwart the Anti-Party Group's attempt to remove Khrushchev, and he was a member of the CPSU Central Committee in 1961–1971. He was deputy chairman of the USSR People's Control Committee in 1967–1981 and died in Moscow in 1982.
