From Katyusha to Buran: the engineer who designed the ground beneath every Soviet rocket
He proposed holding the rocket suspended at launch. Korolev balked — but tests proved Barmin right. They called him the father of Baikonur.
Moscow-born, he studied refrigeration and compressor engineering at Bauman MVTU and visited the US in 1935–36. As chief designer of the Kompressor factory, he developed the Katyusha rocket launcher days after the German invasion. From 1946 he led GSKB SpetsMash, designing launch complexes and silos for virtually every major Soviet rocket: R-1 through R-7, Proton, and Energia-Buran. A member of Korolev's Council of Chief Designers, he also built lunar and Venus soil-sampling devices and conceived the unrealized Zvezda lunar base.

The Magnificent Six: Council of Chief Designers
In 1946, Sergei Korolev formed the Council of Chief Designers (Совет главных конструкторов), an informal coordinating body to lead the Soviet rocket and space program. It gathered the six men responsible for the program's core subsystems, later known as the "magnificent six" (великолепная шестёрка). Korolev led overall (airframe and integration); Valentin Glushko handled engines; Nikolai Pilyugin, guidance and control; Mikhail Ryazansky, radio telemetry; Viktor Kuznetsov, gyroscopic inertial navigation; and Vladimir Barmin took charge of everything on the ground: launch pads, fueling systems, silos, and transport-erector equipment.
Barmin's GSKB SpetsMash was the sole organization responsible for everything the rocket needed before leaving the earth. Though the council was informal, its decisions carried de facto binding force. Every major Soviet rocket's ground infrastructure, from the R-1 through the R-7, Proton, and Energia-Buran, was coordinated within this circle. After Korolev's death in 1966, the council effectively dissolved, but Barmin recalled to the end of his life: "We called each other brothers, and together we paved the road to space." The collaboration (and tension) among these six men was the engine of the Soviet space program's golden age.
