Bolshevik organiser who headed the Central Committee's Registration and Assignment Department and joined the Democratic Centralists
Born in Moscow in 1887 to a railway employee, he joined the RSDLP in 1903. He lived in Swiss exile in 1906–1907 and after his return was repeatedly arrested and banished. In 1918 he was responsible secretary of the Moscow regional party committee and sat on the collegium of the RSFSR NKVD, and from April 1919 to May 1920 he headed the Central Committee's Registration and Assignment Department. He was a Left Communist during the Brest-Litovsk dispute, belonged to the Democratic Centralists in 1920–1921 and signed the Platform of the 46 in 1923, but broke with the oppositions after the 14th Party Congress. He later served as deputy People's Commissar of Education and dean at the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy; arrested in 1937, he died in exile in 1941 and was rehabilitated in 1955.
