Wojciech Chrzanowski

Polish general of the November Uprising who led the Sardinian army in all but name and lost to Radetzky at Novara in 1849

Born at Biskupice in 1793, he began his military career as an artilleryman in 1810 and took part in Napoleon's Russian campaign. From 1815 he served in the army of the Kingdom of Poland, began a map of the kingdom in 1822 and fought in the Russian army under Diebitsch against the Ottomans in 1828–1829. In the November Uprising he became chief of the general staff and a divisional general, and was governor of Warsaw from 18 August to 6 September 1831. After the defeat he emigrated to Paris and was sent by the British government to assist Ottoman military reforms. After the armistice of 1848 Charles Albert called him in as chief of staff of the Piedmontese army; in 1849 he led it in all but name, but was outmanoeuvred and defeated by Radetzky at Novara and dismissed from Sardinian service. He died in Paris in 1861.
