Author of To Live and Chronicle of a Blood Merchant
Born in Hangzhou, he grew up in Haiyan, Zhejiang, in a hospital compound where his doctor parents worked. After failing the 1977 university entrance exam he trained as a dentist from 1978 and began writing in 1983. On the Road at Age Eighteen made him a noted avant-garde writer, and To Live (1993) and Chronicle of a Blood Merchant (1995) were widely read. Brothers (2005-06) got mixed reviews at home. His essay collection China in Ten Words came out in Taiwan in 2011.
