A face of Soviet Lithuania

At the October 1939 Vilnius celebrations, Paleckis publicly demanded President Smetona's resignation — and was arrested and sent to a forced-labor camp. Eight months later, under Soviet auspices, he returned as Lithuania's new head of state.

He became a leader during Lithuania’s Sovietization and later chaired the Soviet of Nationalities. He is a symbolic figure of Baltic republic representation.

The communist who ruled Soviet Lithuania for 34 years

In 1949–50, when Moscow moved to purge the old generation of Lithuanian communists, Sniečkus confronted Stalin directly. Lithuania became the only republic where not a single pre-Soviet communist was arrested.

The longest-serving Soviet republican leader, heading the Lithuanian Communist Party for 34 years (1940–1974). An underground communist who drove Sovietization, he later buffered Moscow's interference and preserved space for the Lithuanian language and culture.
