Aventine Secession (1924)
아벤티노 탈퇴
The withdrawal of most opposition deputies from the Italian Chamber of Deputies in protest against Mussolini’s government after the murder of Giacomo Matteotti. From 27 June 1924 the opposition refused to take part in the Chamber’s work until constitutional legality and democratic freedoms were restored.
In depth
Led by Giovanni Amendola, the opposition relied on constitutional pressure rather than insurrection, hoping King Victor Emmanuel III would dismiss Mussolini. The Communists proposed a general strike, were turned down and returned to the Chamber. The king did not act, the opposition divided over whether to go back, and Mussolini went on the offensive with his speech of 3 January 1925. On 9 November 1926 the Chamber stripped the 123 Aventine deputies of their seats. The name recalls the plebeians of ancient Rome withdrawing to the Aventine Hill.
