First Chief Directorate (PGU)

The operational executive body of the Soviet atomic project, created on 20 August 1945 by State Defense Committee decree No. 9887 alongside the Special Committee. Under Boris Vannikov as its first chief, it directly managed all research institutes, design bureaus, construction organizations, and industrial plants, executing the decisions of the Special Committee. On 26 June 1953 it was reorganized into the Ministry of Medium Machine Building, becoming the institutional foundation of the Soviet atomic industry.
