Freikorps Oberland
오버란트 자유군단
A Freikorps formed in Bavaria in 1919. After overthrowing the Bavarian Soviet Republic it was incorporated into the Reichswehr and helped suppress uprisings in the Ruhr and Upper Silesia; reconstituted as the Bund Oberland in 1921, it took part in the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923.
In depth
When the soviet republic was proclaimed in April 1919, nationalists around the Thule Society raised the unit at the request of Johannes Hoffmann’s government, which had fled to Bamberg. It made its name at the Battle of Annaberg in Upper Silesia in 1921. Banned after the failed putsch of 1923, it was refounded in 1925 and largely absorbed into the SA in March 1933 after the Nazi seizure of power. Heinrich Himmler and Sepp Dietrich passed through the unit and the league.
