French Constitution of 1791
1791년 프랑스 헌법
Constitution enacted by the National Constituent Assembly on 3 September 1791. It proclaimed national sovereignty and representation while delegating executive power to the king in a constitutional monarchy. The system ended with the insurrection of 10 August 1792 and the abolition of the monarchy that September.
In depth
Its preamble declared that nobility, hereditary distinctions, the feudal regime, venality of office and trade corporations no longer existed. Legislative power lay with a unicameral Legislative Assembly, and the king held a suspensive veto that three successive legislatures could override. Citizens were divided into active citizens, who paid specified taxes, and passive citizens with civil rights only. Louis XVI accepted the constitution on 14 September, but the trust shaken by his flight to Varennes that June was not restored. After the insurrection of 10 August 1792 the Legislative Assembly suspended the king, and on 21 September the National Convention abolished the monarchy.
