Greater Poland Uprising (1848)

대폴란드 봉기 (1848)

The rising of the Poles in the Prussian Grand Duchy of Posen in March–May 1848. Inspired by the revolution in Berlin, a Polish National Committee was formed on 20 March, and Ludwik Mierosławski, freed from prison, led the Polish forces to victory at Miłosław on 30 April, but the rising was crushed on 9 May. It opposed the incorporation of Polish-majority districts into a German nation-state, and after its defeat the Grand Duchy was demoted to an ordinary Province of Posen.

In depth

After the conspiracy of 1846, 254 Poles had been arrested and eight, including Mierosławski, sentenced to death, but the Polish prisoners were freed after the Berlin revolution of March 1848. German democrats sympathised with Poland at first but soon turned nationalist, and on 14 and 26 April the king excluded much of the province from the Polish "reorganisation". Mierosławski became commander of the Baden revolutionary army in June 1849.
