Interregional Deputies Group

The first legal parliamentary opposition in Soviet history, formed in 1989 at the First Congress of People's Deputies of the USSR. Co-chaired by Andrei Sakharov, Boris Yeltsin, Yuri Afanasyev, Gavriil Popov, and Viktor Palm, the group demanded repeal of Article 6 of the Constitution (the Communist Party's leading role), multiparty democracy, and democratic electoral reform. At its peak it counted 388 deputies; in 1990 it formed the basis of the Democratic Russia electoral bloc, which won the Russian Republic elections, but the group dissolved after the August 1991 coup, unable to agree on a common constructive programme.
