In depth
After Hungary declared war on the Soviet Union, the agency for foreign nationals decided to deport Jews who could not prove their citizenship, and Prime Minister Bárdossy signed the order on 12 July. Polish and Russian Jews and refugees, but also Hungarian Jews without papers and whole communities in the Carpathian region, were handed over to the Germans via Kőrösmező.
The deportees were marched from Kolomyia to Kamianets-Podilskyi and murdered together with the local Jews. It is counted among the first large-scale massacres of the “Final Solution”, and after the war Bárdossy was held to account for the deportations before a People’s Court.
