MEFESZ (Union of Hungarian University and Academy Students)
MEFESZ
An independent student organization reestablished at the University of Szeged on 16 October 1956. Originally founded in 1945 as a democratic university student federation, it was dissolved by the Rákosi regime by 1948. Students revived it in the autumn of 1956 in defiance of DISZ, the official communist youth organization. At a mass assembly on 20 October it adopted political and educational reform demands that, refined into the Sixteen Points at the Budapest Technical University, became the basis for the 23 October demonstration and the spark of the Hungarian Revolution.
