Head of the Central Committee’s agriculture department who became minister of agriculture and procurement after Stalin’s death

Born in 1911 into a peasant family in St Petersburg, he graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Dairy Livestock Farming in 1932 as a livestock specialist. After working as a state-farm specialist and director he became deputy People’s Commissar of State Farms of the RSFSR in 1939–1940, and he joined the party in 1939. He was deputy head of the Central Committee’s agriculture department in 1940–1946, USSR Minister of Livestock Farming in 1946–1947 and head of the Central Committee’s agriculture department in 1948–1953. After Stalin’s death he was Minister of Agriculture and Procurement of the merged ministry from March to September 1953 and Minister of State Farms in 1953–1955, until he was dismissed as “not coping with the work” and sent to the Virgin Lands as a state-farm director. He later served as Minister of State Farms of Kazakhstan among other posts and retired in 1977.
