Last Soviet Minister of General Machine Building, who oversaw the Energia–Buran launches
Born in 1934 in Sudogda in the Ivanovo Industrial Region, he graduated from the Moscow Electrotechnical Institute of Communications in 1957 and joined the CPSU in 1956. He worked as a researcher at Central Research Institute No. 22 of the Ministry of Defence and at NII-88, and was a secretary of the Kaliningrad (Moscow Oblast) city party committee in 1965–1966. In 1966–1981 he directed the Institute of Measurement Technology and then the Scientific-Production Association of Precision Instruments of the Ministry of General Machine Building as general director and chief designer. He became Deputy Minister of General Machine Building in 1981 and First Deputy Minister in 1987, and as Minister of General Machine Building of the USSR from 17 July 1989 to 26 November 1991 he directed the Energia–Buran launches. In 1991–1994 he was president of the Rosobshchemash corporation.
