Nuclear-fuel plant engineer who became the last Soviet Minister of Atomic Energy and Industry
Born in Sverdlovsk in 1932, he graduated from the physics and technology faculty of the Ural Polytechnic Institute in 1956. He worked at the Ulba Metallurgical Plant in East Kazakhstan in 1956–1975 and joined the CPSU in 1963. He was director of the Chepetsk Mechanical Plant in 1975–1979 and of the Elektrostal Machine-Building Plant in 1979–1986. He moved to the Ministry of Medium Machine Building in 1986, became a deputy minister in 1988, and was Minister of Atomic Energy and Industry of the USSR from July 1989 to 1991. After the Soviet collapse he was First Deputy Minister of Atomic Energy of Russia and president of the nuclear-fuel company TVEL, and he died in Moscow in 2013.
