People's Commissar of Foreign Trade in 1938 who was executed in the purges
Born in 1898 in Mogilev Governorate, he served in the Civil War in the Red Guard and the Red Army as a topographer and head of a brigade political department. In the 1920s he worked on the editorial staff of Pravda, in the Workers' and Peasants' Inspection and in the export-import department of Soyuzkino, and in 1929–1930 he was Soyuzkino's plenipotentiary at the Soviet trade mission in Germany. After the Economic Institute of Red Professors (1934) and postgraduate study at the Academy of Foreign Trade, he directed that academy in 1936–1937. He became Deputy People's Commissar and then, in 1938, People's Commissar of Foreign Trade. Arrested in April 1939, he was executed on espionage charges in 1940 and rehabilitated in 1956.
