German Labour Front
독일노동전선
The national labour organisation of the Nazi Party, which replaced Germany’s independent trade unions after their destruction in May 1933. Robert Ley led it for its entire existence.
In depth
The SA had been attacking union offices since March 1933, and on 2 May, the day after May Day was celebrated as the “Day of National Labour”, union headquarters across Germany were occupied, their funds seized and their leaders arrested. On 10 May the German Labour Front was set up under Ley. It joined workers and employers in one body, abolishing strikes and collective bargaining, and managed a vast fortune from the dues of more than 20 million members. It also ran the leisure organisation Strength Through Joy and the Volkswagen savings scheme.
